Andrew Johnson Document Signed "Andrew Johnson" as president. One partially printed page, 8" x 10", Washington, March 26, 1867. In full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter addressed to the King of Sweden & Norway (credence to Joseph J. Bartlett), dated this day, and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant." Folds are beginning to separate at the edges; toned along the margins and folds. Damage to upper right corner with some loss of paper, not affecting the text. With engraved portrait bust of Andrew Johnson with facsimile signature.



More Information:

Joseph J. Bartlett (1834-1893), a lawyer by trade, was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He resigned his commission in 1866 to return to law, but was appointed by President Andrew Johnson as United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden and Norway. He served for two years before returning to New York to resume his law practice.
