Description
Andrew Johnson Autograph Letter Signed "Andrew Johnson." Five pages, 7.75" x 9.75"; Washington City; January 31, 1852. Great content letter to Sam Milligan exploring the possibilities of being a lawyer in Texas as well as upcoming elections and securing the vote for Sam Houston. In part, "...I have made enquiries of the Hon. V.E. Howard of Texas with respect to the business and the opening in Texas for a Lawyer. He stated to me that his 'money' practice was not worth $2,000 ...and that he had went to Texas in a much more favorable time than the present for obtaining business... He says the Lawyer that can get from one to two thousand dollars worth of money practice is considered doing well... He seemed desirous that you should go to Texas, but felt it incumbent to state the condition of the country as it is. He stated if a man of the proper habits would go there and could make out to support himself for a time, it would be a be a good change in the end. That Texas would... in a few years be one of the richest States in the Union. I have conversed with old Sam, Rusk and Scamy and all that they say on the subject in substance is about the same... The Presidential election is beginning to create some talk among the wise workers. Sam Houston is the strong man for the democracy to run if he could be nominated. The press is subsidized by the other candidates which operates against him. He is the only man that can beat Scott and Scott will be the candidate of the Whig Party unless things take another direction from the present. Have the delegates from that district instructed to support Houston..." Boldly signed by Johnson.Condition: Flattened mail folds and minor creasing, and a few ink smudges. A clean tear (about 5" long) has been repaired with a thin strip of silk on page two. Flattened folds have been reinforced on verso of last page not affecting any text. The pages are bound, and appear to be three sheets held together with a strip of paper.
