Andrew Johnson Autograph Endorsement Signed. One page of a bifolium, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches, Harrisburg, [Pennsylvania]; January 20, 1868. A discharge request made by William Brennan on behalf of his nephew, Sergeant James Brennan of the 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry. President Johnson pens his endorsement on the verso, in full: "Let the discharge be granted. Andrew Johnson."

On the recto, Brennan's request reads, in part: "I have a nephew [James Brennan] in the army whose discharge I am very desirous to obtained [sic], and solicit you to use your influence in my behalf for that purpose...his military record is as follows viz. Enlisted Augt 12th 1862 and served in the Penn. Cavalry till 21st June 1865...having in the meantime participated in the following engagements, viz. Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine run, Kilpatrick's raid, Wilderness, Sheridan's raid, Trevilian Station, Coal [sic] Harbor, Pittsburg and the various Cavalry skirmishes of that period, was wounded through the neck at Culpepper C. H. Va. Oct 11th, 63 and in the shoulder at Trevillion Station June 13th, 64." Signed, "Wm Brennan."

Condition: Faint, erased pencil annotations in the top margin. Smoothed folds, with separations thereat, touching text but not Johnson's endorsement. Vertical toned line through Johnson's endorsement, likely from previous storage, not affecting legibility.
