Description

Abraham Lincoln Surgeon's Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 14.75" x 19.75", Washington, December 26, 1861, appointing "F.M. Heister . . . Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers in the service of the United States." Countersigned by Simon Cameron as secretary of war. With engraved military and patriotic vignettes. Seal of the War Department near the upper left corner.

Francis Muhlenberg Heister (sometimes spelled Hiester) enlisted in the Union Army on December 24, 1861. He served as medical director of the Department of Ohio and died on April 9, 1864, of an unknown disease, thought to be chronic diarrhea he contracted at Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Condition: Smoothed folds with four small holes (one along the vertical fold near the upper edge; three along the second horizontal fold). Scattered foxing. Spot of staining near the right edge.
