Description

Abraham Lincoln: Significant Autograph Album. 6" x 8 ¾" embossed burgundy leather album gold-stamped "Autographs" on the cover. The spine has been recovered and is titled "Abraham Lincoln and the Men of His Times". An inscription on the cover (perhaps a previous owner's name) has been covered over. There is some light wear to the covers, but the interior pages are in great shape. The pages have gilding on all three exposed fore-edges. The first page is signed: "A. Lincoln". The second page has "Yours truly/ U. S. Grant/ Lt. Gen. U. S. A." Other signatures include: Gideon Welles, Gustavus Fox, Francis Spinner, John P. Usher, James A. Garfield, Thaddeus Stevens and Boston Corbett with mounted albumen photo ("Boston Corbett/ Sergt. Co L 16th N.Y. / Cavalry May 10th 1865". There are ninety-seven [97] signatures in all. Many are officers of the U. S. Sanitary Commission, leading us to believe that Lincoln signed this book with the intention that it be auctioned off at one of the Sanitary Fairs. Here, in one book, we have two assassinated presidents, a future president plus the "avenger", Boston Corbett. Housed in a deluxe, custom slipcase.
