Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Naval Appointment. One partially printed page on vellum, 13 1/4 x 16 inches (sight), Washington; November 11, 1862. Matted and framed alongside a printed photograph of Lincoln and an engraved plaque to an overall size of 34 1/4 x 28 inches. Nearing the end of the second year of the Civil War, Lincoln appoints Naval officer "John R. Grainger...Gunner in the Navy of the United States, from the 23rd day of November 1861." Signed, "Abraham Lincoln," as President and countersigned by Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy; additionally signed by William P. Moran as registrar. With blind embossed seal of the Navy at the lower margin, and handsome engraved maritime vignettes.

Includes a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Minor buckling; Welles's signature slightly faded but still legible.
