Abraham Lincoln militia appointment signed eleven days after his inauguration

Abraham Lincoln Signed Militia Appointment. Single sheet, 13 ½ x 8 ½ inches, City of Washington, March 15, 1861. Newly inaugurated President Lincoln appoints William B. Dayton to the rank of Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the "Militia of the District of Columbia." Countersigned by Simon Cameron as Secretary of War. The Civil War would begin less than a month later with the attack on Fort Sumter on April 12. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21 x 16 inches.

Condition: Flattened folds, with restoration to the central vertical fold. Stray stains, with some showthrough from a stain on the verso affecting Cameron's signature.
