Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Endorsement. One page, 3.25" x 2.25" (sight), no place; October 17, 1862. Lincoln approves the use of rooms in the basement of the Patent Office for the newly formed Department of Agriculture. Signed, "Approved, and ordered to be carried into effect. / A. Lincoln." Matted and framed with the original request dated October 16, 1862 and a portrait of Lincoln to the overall size of 30.5" x 19".

The petition reads, in part, "Having formally examined the rooms in the Basement of the old portion of the Pat. Office Building, now occupied by the Commt. of Agriculture... I have of the opinion that the rooms west of the cript [sic] should be assigned to the comm.t of Agriculture - they being necessary for the proper accommodation of this office, and that the Agricultural Dept. should reimburse the Patent Office the amount expended for the furnace & other fixtures which may pass to the use of the Comt. of Agriculture. It appears to me that this arrangement can be made without inconvenience to the Pat. Office as several of the rooms east of the crypt now appropriated by that Bureau are not used to the full extent of their capacity."

In May 1862, Lincoln established the Department of Agriculture as a response to several factors including the Civil War, the increasing rate of immigration to the U.S., and the rapid industrialization of the nation. Lincoln named Isaac Newton the first Commissioner of Agriculture. That same year, Lincoln signed into law the Homestead Act and the Morrill Act. While the former promoted settlement in the western territories, the latter hoped to expand access to higher education by granting states federal lands to establish local colleges focused on agriculture. This endorsement features a bold signature by Lincoln and reflects a rare moment in which Lincoln presided over non-war-related issues in the midst of the Civil War.

Condition: Minor staining to the endorsement, not affecting signature. October 16, 1862 letter is creased along folds with minor toning and slight staining to margins. Neither has been examined outside of the frame.
