Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Document. One page, 6.5" x 6" (sight), Washington; March 21, 1864. This partly printed presidential document directs the Secretary of State to affix the seal of the United States to a warrant for the pardon of John H. Peppers. It reads in full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of John H. Peppers, dated this day, and signed by me: and for so doing this shall be his warrant." John H. Peppers was convicted of horse stealing in October of 1863 in the United States district court for the territory of Colorado. He was originally sentenced to one year's imprisonment. Boldly signed, "Abraham Lincoln." Mounted and framed, along with a print of Lincoln and a placard, to an overall size of 15.75" x 27". Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: Tear at bottom right corner crosses Lincoln's signature and has been repaired on verso with the exception of two small areas of loss that do not touch the signature. Tape visible on right margin. Heavy dampstaining on bottom right corner through signature, though signature is still bold and clear. Some soiling extends to bottom and left margins. Uniformly toned from age with minor, smoothed creasing. Frame has minor chipping to two corners.
