Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Appointment. One partially-printed vellum page, 16" x 13" (sight), Washington, March 7, 1865. Horace J. Gambrill is appointed to the rank of Third Lieutenant in the United States Revenue Service. Signed "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by George Harrington, Secretary of Treasury.

William P. Fessenden resigned as Lincoln's secretary of the treasury four days before this document was signed. George Harrington served for six days as ad interim secretary, and has added "ad int." to his signature. "Abraham Lincoln" is printed in large letters at the top of the document above a patriotic vignette. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.75" x 18.75".

The Revenue Service was established by Alexander Hamilton in 1790 as a maritime law enforcement service. It served the United States Department of Treasury until it was merged with the Lifesaving Service to become the United States Coast Guard.

Condition: Clean and bold signature, gently toned with flattened folds; near fine.
