Description

Abraham Lincoln: Presidential Appointments of Nicholas Bowen with "Gallant Pelham" Bonus. 13 ¾" x 17 ½" vellum document appointing Nicholas Bowen as First Lieutenant in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. Dated August 10, 1861. Boldly signed by Secretary of War Simon Cameron and President Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln signature seems to be unusually large. Folded in twelfths with applied saw-tooth paper seal. Normal fading to the filled-in inscriptions. In our opinion, a top-notch example. Sold together with five vellum appointments for Bowen from 1866 and 1867 with stamped signatures of Edwin Stanton and Andrew Johnson, a 21 1/2" x 14" vellum membership certificate from the "Dialectic Society United States Military Academy", dated June 1, 1860, signed by Society President John "The Gallant" Pelham (legible, but light) and the original japanned tin tube used to hold the appointments. Pelham was a courageous and daring artillery officer under J. E. B. Stuart who was killed at the Battle of Kelly's Ford in March 1863.
