Description

Certified Authentic by John Hay!

Abraham Lincoln: Outstanding Signed Carte-de-Visite. O-60 taken by Mathew Brady in Washington, D.C. sometime in 1862, part of a photo session that produced five different portraits (O-57 through 61). Lincoln strikes a most unusual thoughtful pose while seated. Anthony/Brady back mark. Lincoln has signed the CDV on the lower border: "A. Lincoln." The signature is gorgeous... bold and unmarred. The "icing on the cake" is the inscription on verso by Presidential Secretary John Hay: "I certify the Presidents signature is genuine. [signed] John Hay." Who would be in a better position to authenticate Lincoln's signature than his long-time secretary who, along with John Nicolay, handled practically all of his personal correspondence during the war years? There are some minor abrasions around the perimeter of the back side, likely the result of a previous mounting. The front is in really good shape with just normal aging. Truly an important piece of Lincolniana!
