Description

Abraham Lincoln Military Commission for the District of Columbia Militia Signed As President "Abraham Lincoln". One page, partially printed, 16.5" x 10", Washington, May 16, 1861.

An unusual and early Civil War document in which Lincoln commissions Charles Emerson as a First Lieutenant in the 5th Regiment, 3rd Brigade of the Militia of the District of Columbia. This appointment was part of Lincoln's call for men for the defense of Washington. Countersigned by Simon Cameron as Secretary of War. Permanently mounted to a backing, with splits showing in two horizontal creases and an area of foxing in the upper left corner not affecting text, otherwise with a bright Lincoln signature and with an embossed seal of the U.S. War Office. A very good and quite early example.
