Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 15.75" x 19.5", Washington, February 5, 1862, appointing "George S. Lauman . . . First Lieutenant in the tenth Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." Countersigned by Edwin M. Stanton as secretary of war. With engraved military and patriotic vignettes. Seal of the War Department near the upper left corner. Docketed on the verso.

George S. Lauman, a native of Pennsylvania, enlisted in the Union Army as a second lieutenant in the U.S. 10th Infantry on April 26, 1861. He was in command of Co. "E" during the Battle of Antietam. He died of disease on October 3, 1863, and was promoted to captain posthumously two weeks later.

Condition: Smoothed folds. Unevenly toned throughout with scattered spots of light toning. Small spot of staining near the lower right corner.
