Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln". One vellum page, partially printed, 13.5" x 16.5" (sight), Washington, April 16, 1862, with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by Edwin M. Stanton as secretary of war, appointing "...Electus Backus...Colonel of the Sixth Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." With the blue seal of the War Office in the upper left. Smoothed folds; lightly toned, mostly on the folds. Lincoln's signature is bold and bright. Matted and framed to an overall size of 19.5" x 22.5".

Backus (1804-1862), the son of War of 1812 veteran, Lt. Col. Electus Backus, was himself a veteran of the Seminole War, Mexican War (where he commanded the fortress of San Juan de UlĂșa in 1847), and the Navajo Expedition before the outbreak of the Civil War. Backus died of an unknown disease two months after this appointment.
