Description

Abraham Lincoln Letter Signed "A. Lincoln" as the Republican presidential nominee. One page, 7.25" x 3.5", Springfield, August, 1860, to autograph collector "Master D. W. F. Corle." The letter reads, in full: "As requested by your father. I send you my autograph. Yours &c." Small portrait of a beardless Lincoln at upper left. Mounted to card stock to an overall size of 9.25" x 5.5".

Within two months of signing this letter, Lincoln was elected to the presidency, further dividing an already politically fractured nation. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina formally seceded from the Union, with six other States following suit. By April, 1861, the new Confederate States was openly at war with the United States resulting in four years of unmitigated bloodshed.
