Description

Abraham Lincoln Four Languages Ship's Papers Signed "Abraham Lincoln." One partially printed page, 21.5" x 16.5", Edgartown; August 8, 1864. Issued to "Abraham Osborn Jr, master or commander of the ship called Almira of the further of 362 20/95 tons, or thereabouts...bound for the Pacific Ocean and laden with Corks, Provisions, Ship Stores, and Whaling Utensils for a whaling voyage, and Merchandise as per Manifest." Countersigned by John Vinson as Collector. With a seal at the lower margin.

It was customary for these documents to be signed in advance by the president and secretary of state and then forwarded to the various ports for issuance as needed. During the Civil War, Captain Osborn Jr. was involved in a controversial event when a Confederate raider, the Alabama, burned his ship Ocmulgee in 1862. He then took command of the Almira, and led a whaling voyage from August 8, 1864 until October 4, 1868.

Condition: Flattened folds, with light toning to the folds. Separations starting at edges. Boldly signed at center by Lincoln.
