Description

Abraham Lincoln Four-Language Ship's Passport Signed as President. One partially printed page, 19.75" x 15.5" (sight), New Bedford; May 14, 1864. This passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, authorizes the passage of "Tristram P. Ripley master or commander of the Ship called Young Phenix of the burden of 376 & 63/95 tons, or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores, and utensils for a whaling voyage." Boldly signed in full, "Abraham Lincoln." Countersigned by William H. Seward as secretary of state, Lawrence Grinnell as collector for the port of New Bedford, and James Taylor as notary public. With embossed paper seal affixed at the lower margin. The passport has been handsomely matted and framed to the overall size of 28" x 24.25". Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: Split along horizontal fold on righthand side extends to center of document. Two smaller splits at vertical fold on the far righthand side. Small bits of paper loss at horizontal fold. One fold crosses one letter of signature. Smoothed folds. Tape stain showthrough from verso.
