Description
Abraham Lincoln Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln", two pages, 7.5" x 9.75", Washington D.C., March 1, 1865. The second page bearing the endorsement (in the hand of John Hay) is mostly trimmed away. Original letter dated March 1, 1865 must have been hand-delivered since the endorsement is dated the same day. Thomas Jacks "of Arks" writes to "Mr. Lincoln - President U.S." to request the release of two Confederate prisoners, noting that "They are both conscripts - poor men with families", and Lincoln grants the request. This exchange received publicity during the 1972 Presidential Campaign, when the Vietnam War was the major issue and the amnesty question was hotly debated. The letter was featured in an October 31, 1972 article in the Akron Beacon Journal. Typical folds, blank portion of second page was cut away as described above. Smudge on date. Otherwise, very good to fine, with a clean strong signature.Auction Info
