Description

Abraham Lincoln: Document Signed [DS] Military Appointment. 8" x 10" printed and manuscript bifolium document, War Department, Washington, D. C., July 21, 1862. Signed by Abraham Lincoln, as President, and Edwin M. Stanton as Secretary of War. It appoints Eliphalet W. Jackson of Maine as a Chaplain for the United States Hospital at Washington, D. C. The document is annotated in another hand at bottom "Armory Hospital. A. L." It is sold with an earlier document granting Jackson a leave of eight days duration. It is endorsed on verso by Charles A. Leale, one of the surgeons who attended the stricken president at Ford's Theatre on the night of the assassination. Leale directs that Jackson returns to the hospital on the expiration of his furlough. The signatures are exceptionally bold making this an attractive grouping.

Condition: Small stain on right edge of Lincoln document.
