Description

Abraham Lincoln Document Signed as President. One page, 8" x 9.75", Washington, [D.C.]; July 22, 1861. Document signed by President Lincoln notifying the President of Chile of the appointment of Thomas H. Nelson envoy to that country. The document reads: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to 'the envelope of a letter addressed to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Chile, accrediting Thomas H. Nelson as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary;' dated this day, and signed by me: and for so doing this shall be his warrant." Signed, "Abraham Lincoln."

Thomas H. Nelson (1824-1896) was a U.S. diplomat and politician from Indiana. On December 8, 1863, during his time in Chile, he organized rescue operations during the catastrophic Church of the Company Fire in Santiago, garnering himself the name of "a true hero of Chile" for doing so. He later was made U.S. Envoy to Mexico from 1869 to 1873 by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Condition: The document has the usual folds; paper loss along left-hand and right-hand edges, slight weakening in folds around Lincoln's signature. Soiling at the bottom right, with ink bleeding on the third line of the document.
