Description

Abraham Lincoln Check Signed "A Lincoln." One page, 7.5" x 2.5", Springfield, June 13, 1859, issued in the amount of seven dollars and twenty-five cents on a "Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company" check.

The check is made out to William Henry Herndon, "W. H. Herndon," who at the time was Lincoln's law partner. Following Lincoln's assassination, Herndon (1818-1891) began work on a biography of Lincoln by collecting correspondence, notes, newspaper articles, as well as interviews with Lincoln's family and friends, including Mary Todd Lincoln and Lincoln's cousin, Dennis Hanks. The three volume Herndon's Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life, co-written with Jesse Weik, was published in 1889 to mixed reviews.

Cross canceled three times. Vertical tear through the middle that has been archivally repaired. Some light soiling, but still in fine condition.
