Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Note Signed with Mary Todd Lincoln Signature. One page, 6" x 9"; Philadelphia; February 21, 1861. In full: "Philadelphia, Feb. 21, 1861. Mrs. James E. D. Stevens / My dear Madam / Below is my autograph according to your request. / Yours truly / A. Lincoln." Mary Todd Lincoln signs directly beneath: "Mary Lincoln / Philadelphia May 11th."

The recipient adds a note: "[Written by President Lincoln and Mrs. Lincoln, when the former was on his way to Washington to be inaugurated the first time. The inauguration took place March 4th.]" This note is confusing, because Mary Todd has dated her signature May 11. Either the First Lady added her signature at a later time, or used an incorrect date. The left edge of the page is a bit rough, suggesting that it was removed from an autograph album.

Condition: Gently toned, a bit darker at the edges. With bold ink.
