Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed. One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 10", no place; April 7, 1862. Lincoln addresses Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton on the verso of an undated autograph memorandum concerning the case of James H. McKay. He writes, in full:

"Respectfully submitted to the Secretary of War. This is a very meritorious case, and I hope Capt. McKay may be set right.

A. Lincoln

April 7, 1862."

Lincoln replaced his first Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, with the more temperate and capable Edwin Stanton in January 1862 after a series of mismanaged blunders and allegations of corruption. One such error involved Captain James McKay, a quartermaster from Illinois. After turning over the quartermaster stores to the United States in April 1861, McKay applied for a similar post in the Union Army, which the president duly endorsed. He then reported for duty only to discover that Cameron had never provided the promised appointment and commission. McKay appealed to Lincoln, as evidenced here, and the president set about rectifying the situation by forwarding the matter on to the more dependable Stanton. The endorsement is housed in a black-cloth portfolio case that measures 9" x 11.5".

Condition: Smoothed folds.
