Description
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln". One page, 6.25" x 4.25", [Washington, D.C.]; January 14, 1863. In response to a request from a group of Missouri Members, Lincoln writes a short endorsement referring to the communication. It reads, in full: "Mo. Members ask to have Gen. Schofield succeed Gen. Curtis. A. Lincoln/ Jan. 14, 1863".Included with Lincoln's endorsement is the letter that Lincoln references, which is signed by six members of the Department of Missouri. The members state that by promoting General Schofield to succeed General Curtis, "the best interests of the public service will be promoted, and greater cordiality and a more hearty cooperation produced between the Executive Government of Missouri, & the Federal authorities in that state than now exists..." General John Schofield was indeed promoted to commander of the Department of Missouri in 1863, and helped maintain relative peace during the debate over Missouri's status as a state. Both the Union and Confederacy claimed that Missouri, a hotly contested border state, was rightfully theirs. However, Schofield's service was tainted when he refused a Union faction access into Missouri while they were pursuing enemy combatants. This decision led to a massacre in Lawrence, Kansas, and resulted in a group of Pro-Union Missourians calling upon Lincoln for his dismissal. Lincoln ultimately supported Schofield's decision.
Condition: Mat burn on both the endorsement and the letter. Flattened folds to the endorsement with a tear at the lower left corner. There is mounting residue on verso. Else good. Boldly signed by Lincoln.
