Description
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln" as president. One page, 3.25" x 3", n. p. [Washington], February 8, 1865. Originally found on the verso of a larger letter requesting a discharge for a soldier (from which this endorsement has been removed), the president has written: "Let the man take the oath of Dec. 8, 1863 & be discharged." Toned and slightly chipped edges with some smudging of the ink. Text remains bold.By February, 1865, the war was well in hand for the United States. City after city throughout the South was falling into Federal hands. Ulysses S. Grant was wrapping up the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, and within two months the Confederate capital of Richmond would fall, forcing the surrender of Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. William T. Sherman was finalizing his campaign through the South, marching his army north through the Carolinas following his capture of the city of Atlanta. By April, he accepted the surrender of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. Unfortunately, two months after authorizing the discharge of one of his soldiers, Lincoln himself would fall victim to an assassin's bullet, becoming one of the last casualties of a war which tore apart the nation.
