Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln" as president. One page, 8" x 10", June 22, 1863. The sixteenth president endorses this discharge certificate for twenty-three-year-old Private William Holschoh (also spelled Holzhuch) in full, "I shall be very glad if this man, disabled in our service, can get some employment for a livelihood. [signed] A. Lincoln June 22, 1863." The document bears a stamp in the upper left which reads, "Bounty Paid Washington, D.C. Jun 27 1867 D. Taylor Paymaster U.S.A." The verso contains several other endorsements and signatures, besides the president's, some in red ink. The first reads, "Hd.qrs. 8th Army Corps, Balto. Md. June 8th 1863. To be discharged By command of Maj. Gen Schneck." Below the president's endorsement, a Brigadier General Augustus Moor[?] signs an instruction to a captain on June 28 to "give this . . . [illegible] man employment."Before the Civil War, Holschoh, a native of Germany, was a shoemaker. In June 1861, only weeks after the war began, the young immigrant enlisted in F Company in the 28th Ohio Infantry. After receiving wounds at the Battle of Antietam in September 1862, his left arm was amputated. Surgeon Henry Palmer signed this discharge at York, Pennsylvania, on June 9, 1863. President Lincoln was busy the day he endorsed this document: he made two appointments, sent reports and letters to some of his generals, and he began his summer stay near Washington at Soldiers' Home. Yet in the midst of all of this, he still found time to attend to a disable soldier.
The document has been professionally repaired at the separated folds using Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste. The repairs do not interfere with any of Lincoln's handwritten text or signature. Moderate surface soiling, foxing, and some stains, are evident, possibly the results of being carried in the veteran's pocket following the war.
