Abraham Lincoln As President Document Signed, one page, partially printed, vellum, 13.75" x 17.17.25", Washington, D.C., February 21, 1862, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. An exceptionally nice Union officer's commission naming William E. Morford an "Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers with the rank of Captain". Visually pleasing with engraved martial vignettes, a blue War Department seal and bold signatures. Smoothed folds, else excellent condition. Morford enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant and soon rose to become Captain of Co. "H", 1st New Jersey Cavalry. This commission documents his transfer to the Quartermaster Department, from which he was mustered out at war's end with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
