Description

Abraham Lincoln Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln". One partially printed page, 17" x 11", Washington, D.C.; July 11, 1864. A document in which Lincoln appoints "Richard R. Shekell...Justice of the Peace...to keep, and cause to be kept, all laws for the good of the peace, and for the preservation of the same, and for the quiet rule and government of the people..." Paper and wax seal of the United States War Office affixed in the lower left portion of the document. Boldly signed by Lincoln and countersigned by William H. Seward.

Condition: Uneven toning throughout with some mat burn. Light creasing around the paper seal. Flattened folds; areas of separation and some chipping at folds have been reinforced with archival material on verso. A tear across the right side has also been repaired and reinforced with material on verso. Small amount of paper loss at right vertical edge.
