Description
Abraham Lincoln and Simon Cameron Autograph Endorsements Signed. One page, 4 x 5 3/4 inches (sight), [Washington]; August 30, 1861. Mounted and framed alongside a printed photograph of Lincoln to an overall size of 22 x 15 inches. Writing just five months into the Civil War, Lincoln forwards a recommendation for a sutler appointment to Cameron. His endorsement reads, in full:"Respectfully submitted to the Secretary of War, requesting careful consideration, as being based on excellent recommendations." Signed, "A. Lincoln / Aug. 30, 1861."
Beneath, Cameron adds his own endorsement: "Appointment Sutler approved / Simon Cameron / Sep 2, 1861." At the lower margin, in an unidentified hand: "Warrant requested / Sept 7, 1861."
Sutlers were civilian merchants who followed the army and sold everyday goods that the government did not provide. Because only one sutler could legally serve each regiment, the posts were much sought after as they were highly profitable. Appointments were generally handled within the regiment, but Lincoln is recorded as having personally endorsed several sutlers throughout the course of the war.
Condition: Not examined out of frame. Uneven top edge with a touch of loss where page was removed, just touching text but not affecting legibility. Lightly toned with very minor ink smudging.
