Description
Abraham Lincoln: 1833 Document Signed. 7.75" x 5" legal document, Sangamon County, Illinois, October 25, 1833. Deputy Sheriff D. Dickinson authorized three men (Abraham Lincoln, H. Armstrong, and J. Clemmett) to appraise two lots of land, pursuant to a judgment issued in favor of Nelson Allery. Text written in the hand of Deputy Sheriff Dickinson. Signed by the team of three surveyor appraisers, headed by "A. Lincoln." Short tears at central horizontal fold; else, excellent. Signed Lincoln documents from this early period are extremely difficult to source. The document is listed on page 20 of The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln. It was originally sold by the Abraham Lincoln Association to finance the publication of the Basler work. Sold as part of the Elsie O. and Philip D. Sang Foundation Collection in 1978, and subsequently at the Spring 1997 Sotheby's Fine Manuscript auction. Accompanied by an LOA dated August 13, 1999 from Gallery of Fame in Carnegie, Pennsylvania.
