Description

[Orlando H. Ross] and [Civil War]. Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U. S. Grant." Three integral pages, 5" x 8", "Head-Quarters Armies of the United States," City Point [Virginia], September 5, 1864. Writing to his cousin and aide-de-camp, Captain Orlando H. Ross, Grant is praising Ross' work in the Post Office Department upon the latter's resignation. In full:

"In approving your resignation it gives me pleasure to bear testimony to the services you have rendered to the country through three years of the rebellion now being waged against [illegible] government. As Assisistant [sic] Special Agt. of the Post Office Dept. the Western Army was deeply indebted for the order and regularity established, more by your labor and energy than that of any other person, in conducting their Mail through a hostile country. In that capacity you excelled. It will afford me pleasure to recommend you for a similar position in the Civil service of the Government should you desire it. In all positions you have been placed in as Aid-de-Camp [sic] you have shown a commendable energy and zeal which if continued in civil life will make you friends and secure to you and family a competancy [sic] through life. Bespeaking for your success and enjoyment after more than three years service in the tented field I subscribe myself, your friend, U. S. Grant."

The letter is heavily damaged and has been silked on the verso of both pages, which has been reattached after detachment along the vertical fold. The silk has been laid over the text of page two, but the text is still visible. The line, "you have shown a commendable energy and zeal," has been written over in a later hand in black ink. The horizontal folds have separated in places noticeably through Grant's signature, but have been repaired by the silking.
