Description
[Mexican War]. Ulysses S. Grant Requisition Signed. One page, 8.25" x 10.25", Tacubaya [Mexico City, Mexico], December 31, 1847. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1843, 2nd Lt. Ulysses S. Grant was assigned to the 4th U.S. Infantry as the regimental quartermaster and it was in that capacity that he began his military career during the Mexican War. Here, the future eighteenth president signs, "US Grant / 2nd Lt. 4th Infy / Reg.l Q M," to a duplicate "Invoice of Clothing, and Camp and Garrison Equipage, turned over to Lieut. Jenks Beaman . . . by Lieut. U.S. Grant." Included on the list is clothing, blankets, knapsacks, tents, etc. Jenks Beaman (1821-1848) died four months later at Tampico, Mexico.Folds. Some separation of the lower fold beginning at the left edge. Small binding holes at the upper left corner.
Grant served in the Mexico under Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott where, despite his assignment as a quartermaster, he got close enough to the front lines to see action, taking part in the battles of Resaca de la Palma, Palo Alto, Monterrey, and Veracruz. Grant was twice brevetted for bravery: at Molino del Rey and Chapultepec. He was a keen observer of the war, watching and learning from the actions of the colonels and generals around him.
