(1)  John H. Lewis ALS to "Genl John Coffee/ care of Capt. A. J. Donelson", one page, July 11, 1830. (After the death of his father Samuel Donelson in 1805, Andrew Jackson Donelson was under the guardianship of Andrew and Rachel Jackson, who were not able to have children of their own.  A favorite of Andrew Jackson, the young Donelson entered West Point in 1817 and later served as President Jackson's private secretary.) The postscript reads, "I beg you to present my respects to the President & Major Eaton."

(2)  John Coffee ALS to "Col. John McKinley", four pages, December 1, 1830, Florence. John McKinley was serving as a U.S. Senator from Alabama when this letter was written. He was later appointed as an associate justice to the Supreme Court.  Coffee, a past business associate of McKinley, reports that he had met with Alabama Governor Gabriel Moore in Franklin, Tennessee, to silence a rumor that Coffee, with the backing of "the friends of Genl. Jackson", would run against Governor Moore in the next election.

(3)  Gabriel Moore ALS to "General John Coffee", nine and one-half pages, January 4, 1831, Tuscaloosa, expressing his disagreement with Coffee over a meeting with President Jackson concerning Alabama's next gubernatorial election. Moore ends his stinging letter, "In conclusion permit me to admonish you to be less arrogant". Gabriel Moore was the fifth governor of Alabama. He resigned later in 1831 to seek a seat in the senate. He was successful with that bid, but was defeated in 1837 by John McKinley.

(5)  Gabriel Moore ALS to "John Gayle Esq.", one and one-half pages, January 9, 1831, "At the Capital".

(6)  John Gayle ALS, to "Genl Coffee", two and one-half pages, January 14, 1831, Tuscaloosa. Judge John Gayle was elected Alabama's seventh governor later in 1831, after Governor Moore resigned in 1831 to seek a U.S. Senate seat.

(7)  John H. Lewis ALS to "Genl John Coffee, one page, May 21, 1831, Florence.

(8)  Broadside: "To the Honorable, the Members of the General Assembly." One page (two columns), 10.5" x 10.5", November 30, 1830, signed in print by Gabriel Moore, concerning the misunderstandings over an appointment involving President Jackson. With some bleedthrough from handwriting on verso.

This fine archive is worthy of much further research.
