Description

Thomas Jefferson Randolph Autograph Letter Signed. "Th: J. Randolph." One page with integral address cover, 7.75" x 10"; Albemarle County, Virginia; March 9, 1850. Randolph writes to Richard T. Archer acknowledging the receipt of his letter announcing the death of his son-in-law William Mann Randolph who had died on February 20, 1850. He writes: "Yours of the 20 of February announcing the death of Wm M Randolph was received two days since and communicated to his mother. He had been devoted to his children when here and their grandmother had kept his image fresh in their memory..." Randolph asks Archer to send William's watch or any memento that might be given to the children. He then thanks him for the acts of kindness bestowed on his daughter, Margaret Smith Randolph (William's wife who had died in 1843), "she sank to the grave with those feelings deeply impressed upon her and left these as a legacy to us, happy to acknowledge them." Archer was a physician and likely attended to both William and Margaret.

Thomas Jefferson Randolph was grandson of Thomas Jefferson and was left executor of his estate. He served at the Virginia Secession Convention of 1861. He held a colonel's commission in the Confederate Army, but never fought as planters were excused from service.
