Description

Thomas Jefferson Handwritten Check Signed as President. One page, 7.25" x 4.5" (sight), no place; June 13, 1803. Check penned in President Jefferson's hand ordering bank proprietor John Barnes to pay one Joseph Daugherty $26.56. He writes, in full:

"Pay to Joseph Daugherty or order twenty six dollars fifty six cents for value received on account of Sir, Your humble sert, Th: Jefferson."

The check was signed by Joseph Daugherty upon receipt of the funds and contains a number of notations by Daugherty at the lower left margin. Endorsed on verso. The check is attractively matted and framed to the overall size of 13.5" x 10.5". Not examined out of the frame. It is accompanied by LOAs from PSA/DNA and University Archives. Condition: Appears to be slightly trimmed at the left edge, just touching one letter of text. Smoothed folds. Slight brushing to Daugherty's signature and one letter of Jefferson's.
