More Information:
Dear Sir,
I am afraid I shall never be so well again that mince pies will do me good! However, it is certain I should be very glad to have a little serious talk with you, if opportunity would favour. But unluckily it is not possible at present: we are just about setting off for Hampshire, to some friends of yours I think (The Grange &c); and do not return till February, or even till the session begins.
I was heartily glad to find your name among the M.P.s, -- for reasons of my own and of the world's. Always
Very sincerely yours
T. Carlyle"
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, and historian, is considered one of the most important social commentators of his time. At the time he wrote this letter, Carlyle was living in Chelsea, where he became known as the "Sage of Chelsea." It was in this location that he wrote his successful book, The French Revolution: A History, which was published in three volumes in 1837.
