Description

Theodor Billroth Autograph Letter Signed "Th. Billroth". Three pages of a bifolium, 5.5" x 8.5"; Wien, [Austria]; December 25, 1880. An untranslated letter written in German, but first word appears to be "Brahms." Billroth (1829-1894) was a highly respected Austrian surgeon best known for performing the first successful gastrectomy to remove cancer; he is widely held as the father of modern abdominal surgery. He was also the first surgeon to perform an esophagectomy. Apart from his medical career, Billroth was also an accomplished musician and believed the two to be complimentary fields.

Condition: Light age-toning and flattened mail folds. Pencil annotation in verso from previous collector.
