William Whipple war-dated appointment

William Whipple Revolutionary War-dated Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 3.5", "Camp on Road [sic] Island," August 12, 1778. At the time he penned this appointment, Declaration Signer Whipple was serving as Brigadier General of the New Hampshire Militia. No doubt deep in preparations for the Battle of Rhode Island (August 29, 1778), at which he led the 4th, 5th, 15th, Peabody's and Langdon's militia brigades, Whipple announces the appointment of Nathaniel Gaffield to Quartermaster. In full: "This certifies that I have appointed Mr. Nath. Gaffield [sic] Quarter Master of the Brigade of New Hampshire Volunteers under my command. Wm. Whipple. Brig. Gen." Lightly toned and inlaid to an overall size of 9.5" x 5.5".
