Description
William Penn Document Signed "Wm Penn." One partially-printed page with integral blank, 8.25" x 13", in English and Latin, [England], circa June 1707. Penn, as executor of an estate, signs this settlement between Penn and Thomas Cuppage in the amount of "ffoure hundred . . . pounds of good and lawfull money of Great Britain." Witnessed by J. Springett, John Page, and Joseph Davis who have countersigned. Docketed in another hand on the verso of the blank. Weakness of the smoothed folds has caused some separation. Edges are chipped in places and toned. Several scattered spots of foxing.After founding the colony of Pennsylvania two decades earlier, Penn returned with his family to England in 1701. Plagued by family troubles, financial difficulties (he was thrown into debtor's prison in 1706, a sentence which was reduced to house arrest), and poor health (he suffered back to back strokes in 1712 which left him speechless and a near invalid), he died destitute in 1718.
