Description

William Penn Autograph Document Signed "Wm Penn." One page, 6.75" x 5", September 7, 1683. A receipt issued for monies received for land. In full:

"Received this seaventh [sic] day of the seaventh month [September] 1683 of Luke Brinly by ye hands of James Harrison fifty shillings being in part of pay for one hundred acres of land in ye County of Bucks, I say received by me, Wm. Penn."

Penn was the founder and proprietor of Pennsylvania, a colony settled by Quakers, whose tolerance set an important precedent. Penn's ship The Welcome arrived in Philadelphia on October 27, 1682. The ship Friends Adventure was part of Penn's fleet, and Luke Brinly (also spelled Brindley) of Leek, Staffordshire, England was listed as a passenger. The craft left Liverpool on July 14, 1682, and arrived in America on September 28, a month before Penn. Brinly settled in Bucks County, where he served as sheriff in 1684. He obviously wanted more land than his original allocation (most grantees were allocated parcels of 500 or 1,000 acres), and approached Penn in 1683 as this receipt attests.

Penn remained in the colony less than two years, departing in August 1684 to return to England to address a dispute with Lord Baltimore. He spent another two years in Pennsylvania in 1699-1701. Only a handful of documents written entirely in Penn's hand have appeared on the market; additionally, most are signed in England. This handwritten receipt records what is likely one of the earliest land transactions to take place in Pennsylvania. Paper has toning and light soiling, with a stain at top affecting two words (which remain visible). A spot of paper has been added to a chip at top margin.
