Description

William Jennings Bryan Autograph Letter Signed "W.J. Bryan." Two pages, 8.5" x 11", Miami, Florida; December 28, 1917. Addressed to a Mr. Berger, the letter discusses having Berger visit him. It reads in full:

"When are you coming East? I am very anxious to confer with you. You have never seen Miami as you, when in Washington, expressed a desire to come down here this winter I am hoping you can stop here on your way to Virginia, if you return before March, when I go North. It is lovely down here. Miami is growing rapidly. I don't know of any place where real estate is rising more rapidly. I have been worried about the germs which Wm has developed. Helen's health seemed to be much better than it was a year ago. We had a delightful visit with them & their interesting little brood. Mrs. Bryan joins me in a New Years greeting to you and the children."

William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) ran as the Democratic candidate for President in 1896, 1900, and 1908. He was defeated in his first two campaigns by William McKinley, and in his third by William Howard Taft. Known as the "Great Commoner" and hailed for his oratory skills, Bryan distinguished himself as a lawyer and statesman. He later served under Woodrow Wilson as Secretary of State but, being a pacifist, stepped down as World War I approached. He hoped to be a part of the peace delegation at the end of World War I, but was not asked by Wilson to participate. It was his battle against Clarence Darrow in the Scopes "Monkey Trial" -- pitting creationist dogma versus Darwinian/evolutionary theory -- that caused his death. It is reported that the grueling battle taxed all of Bryan's strength with a courtroom that often reached 118-degrees in the midday. He died in his sleep several days following the trial.
