Description
William H. Seward Document Signed with Carte de Visite. Two partially printed pages of a bifolium, 7 3/4 x 9 5/8 inches; City of Washington; September 18, 1868. In part: "I certify, that hereto annexed is a true copy of a Proclamation of the President of the United States, made on the twenty-fifth day of July in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two..." Signed, "William H. Seward" as Secretary of State.Mounted on the second page of bifolium is a copy of the Proclamation, in which it states, "In pursuance of the sixth section of the act of Congress entitled 'An act to suppress insurrection and to punish treason and rebellion, to seize and confiscate property of rebels, and for other purposes... I, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, President of the United States, do hereby proclaim to and warn all persons within the contemplation of said sixth section to cease rebellion, against the Government of the United States, and to return to their proper allegiance to the United States, on pain of the forfeitures and seizures as within and by said sixth section provided." Bifolium is secured by a purple ribbon weaved through two hole punches on the left edge, secured in place by a red paper seal at bottom left.
Accompanying the document is a carte de visite of William H. Steward, 2 3/8 x 4 inches; New York; no date. Head and shoulders pose of Seward facing left in dress attire, published by E. Anthony from the photographic negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery.
Condition: Flattened folds, light toning, and stray staining throughout. Offsetting from both the paper seal and proclamation. Purple ribbon is stained and fraying, with separation at centerfold. Carte de visite is toned with stray staining.
