Three John Lawrence Letters (Two Signed), comprised of one ALS, one LS, and one retained copy, all dated during the Revolutionary War and concerning Lawrence's duty as Connecticut's treasurer. John Lawrence (1719-1802) served as Connecticut's treasurer from 1769-1789.The ALS (one bifolium page, 6" x 7.5", from Hartford [Connecticut], February 21, 1776) is written to Epaphras Bull, "Pay Master." This letter is endorsed and signed on page two by Benjamin Huntington, a delegate to the Second Continental Congress. Lawrence writes regarding the payment of American troops in part: "I received a Letter from the Honble. Jon. Trumbull Esqr. desiring me to inform you that one of the Companies belonging to Col. Burrells Battallion is raised in the East Part of the government and that the sum of Four Hundred and Sixty Pounds is wanted for that purpose which sum you will please to deliver to Benjamin Huntington Esqr. and take his Rect. to be by him Delivered to Mr. David Trumbull of Lebanon to pay Capt. Benjamin Throops Compy. [in the 1st Connecticut Regiment]." Toned with smoothed folds.
The retained copy is in a secretarial hand (one page, 7.5" x 12", n.p., September 10, 1779) and is addressed to Jesse Root of Philadelphia regarding progress of the American cause during the war. In part: "For your vigilance and care in procuring a guard for the proscribed emissions and likewise your faithfulness in representing the cause of its delay to the board of Treasury & Mr. Hopkinson. . . . Am happy to hear that things respecting America wear so favorable an aspect in Europe. . . . His Excelly. the Gov. was here last week to meet the plenipo. Upon his arrival in town he received a letter from Genl. Gates informing that a French fleet was coming to assist us - should that prove true it would entirely subvert the plan of the Enemys operations, & the poor doomed towns of Hartford & Hebron yet be saved." Toned with smoothed folds.
The LS (one and one-half bifolium pages, 7.5" x 12", from Hartford, March 31, 1783) is written to Governor Jonathan Trumbull of Lebanon regarding "sundry Instructions . . . respecting the sale of bills of Exch. on Holland and Spain" associated with Colonel Jeremiah Wadsworth, the American commissary to the commander-in-chief of the French forces in America. Lawrence asks Trumbull for advice on how "to proceed in this Matter." Toned with foxing and smoothed folds.
