Description

Thomas Lynch Jr. Signature. 1 x ½ inches, no place; no date. Signature, "Lynch," likely removed from a book. Matted and framed to an overall size of 6 x 4 ½ inches. The son of a prominent planter and political leader in colonial South Carolina, Lynch became involved in revolutionary politics in 1774 when he replaced his ailing father in the South Carolina delegation to the Second Continental Congress. Two years later, he signed the Declaration of Independence.

Though Lynch rose to national prominence after his father's death, he had a long history as a key player in local revolutionary politics. He served as a delegate to the first and second South Carolina provincial congresses and was part of the group that created the South Carolina constitution. Despite his allegiance to the revolutionary cause, he was one of the first to threaten secession from the proposed confederation. Less than a month after he signed the Declaration of Independence, he stated, "If it is debated, whether their Slaves are their Property, there is an End of the Confederation."

In 1779, thirty-year-old Lynch and his wife sailed to the West Indies and the ship was shortly lost at sea. He was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence to die, making his signature the scarcest and most difficult to obtain of all the Signers.

The signature is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Goodspeed's Book Shop and a certificate of authenticity from University Archives.

Condition: Toned with top left and right corners cut. Not examined outside of the frame. Mat slightly worn at right edge.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
