Description

Prior to the Revolutionary War, Theodorick Bland (1742-1790) served as the clerk of Prince George County, Virginia. Though his military performance during the war was average, he became an active statesmen near the end of the war, noted for serving as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1780 through 1783. He was later called on as a delegate to the Virginia Convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution. While there, he voted against ratification because he did not want the federal government to have too much power. In 1789, he was elected to the First U.S. Congress. One year later he died, becoming the first congressman to die in office.

This document begins, "George the Third, by the Grace of GOD, of Great-Britain. . . . To the Sheriff of Prince George County, Greeting. We command you that of the Gods and Chattels of Samuel Fuqua late in your Bailiwick, you cause to be made Two pounds nineteen Shillings and two pence three farthings Current money Eighty pounds of Tobacco of Seven Shillings and Tea pence which George Noble late in our said County Court hath recovered against him for Debt and for his Costs."
