Description
Sir William Penn Document Signed. One page, 7.5" x 9.25", n.p. [London], April 4, 1660. In part:"Whereas by an Order of his Royall [sic] Highness James Duke of York, Lord High Admirall [sic] of England and Dated the 31st of March 1660, Morgan Phillipps is... appointed Boatswaine of his Majesty's ship the Pearle, and in pursuance thereof hath received a copy of the instructions proper for his place ... These are to pray & require you to Enter the said Morgan Phillips Boatswaine of the said ship the Pearle accordingly with such an alloment of wages and Victuals for himself and servant as is proper... And for so doing this shall be your warrant."
Signed "W Penn." The appointment has also been signed by Arthur Annesley, Lord Anglesey as Treasurer of the Navy; Admiral Sir John Mennes as Comptroller of the Navy, and William Brouncker, president of the Royal Society.
Sir William Penn was a prominent name in the British Commonwealth Navy during the English Civil War and the First and Second Anglo-Dutch Wars. As a reward for his brave and gallant service, Oliver Cromwell awarded him several estates in Ireland. In 1660, Penn was appointed a commissioner of the Navy Board, in which capacity he signed this naval appointment. Addressed to the clerk of the Navy Yard at Woolrich, this document directs him to assign an officer to one of his Majesty's ships.
Penn died at the age of 49 in 1670. Ten years after his death, King Charles II granted thousands of acres of land in America to the Admiral's son, William Penn the Younger, to show his gratitude for the Admiral's countless services to king and country; the young Penn named his estate Pennsylvania in honor of his father. Document is toned, with a few areas of foxing; heavy wear along right margin has resulted in two minute areas of separation.
