Description
Samuel Adams Militia Appointment Signed. One partially printed page, 14 1/4 x 12 inches, Massachusetts; October 16, 1793. Adams appoints "Ebenezer Shillaber...Quarter Master of the Sixth Regiment, in the First Brigade and Second Division of the Militia" of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Signed, "Saml Adams" in the left margin, just beneath an embossed paper seal, and countersigned by John Avery as Secretary of the Commonwealth. Docketed on the verso.Ebenezer Shillaber (1764-1807) rose to the rank of captain before his death at age forty-three. He is buried at Broad Street Cemetery in Salem, Massachusetts, and his Georgian-style residence, known as the Ebenezer Shillaber House, still stands in the city.
Condition: Lightly toned with flattened folds. Several separations at the folds and a short, closed tear at the right edge touching text but not affecting legibility. Rectangular adhesive staining at the edges. Top right corner fully separated and inexpertly reattached with cello tape. Some creasing along the left edge.
