Description

Sam Houston Surveyor Appointment Signed as governor of Texas. One page, 15.75" x 12.75" (sight), Austin, September 18, 1860, appointing "...Geo. W. Gann...to the office of Surveyor in and for [Angelina] County...Giving and Conferring upon him...full Power and Authority, as such, to exercise and discharge all and singular the Duties, Rights, Obligations, and Trusts...to his said Office..." Countersigned by Eber W. Cave as Texas secretary of state. Detached along vertical fold, with some minor loss of paper. Upper vertical fold weakened with separation; two small holes not affecting the text. Light waterstaining throughout. Houston's signature and elaborate paraph remain bright and unaffected. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.5" x 17.5".

Six months after signing this appointment, Houston (1793-1863), who opposed secession, was forced out of office after Texas voted to secede from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War.
