Description
Sam Houston Land Grant Signed as president of the Republic of Texas. One partially printed page, 14.5" x 12.25", Austin, February 5, 1842, granting to "...Richard S. Welch...Six Hundred and Forty Acres of Land...In Jasper County on Big Cow Creek..." Cosigned by Texas Land Commissioner Thomas W. Ward. Blind embossed seal of the Republic of Texas at lower edge (which is extremely faint) with stamp of the General Land Office near the lower left corner. Docketed on the verso. Houston's signature and paraph are very faint. Folds are weak with separation at places. Small holes at the intersection of the folds resulting in paper loss and some loss of text. Overall toning and some soiling. Chipping at the edges. One month after signing this grant, a 1,000 man strong Mexican army under the command of Gen. Rafael Vásquez invaded Texas and, by March 5, were outside of San Antonio. The citizens of Austin, the capital, were ordered to evacuate, President Houston heading south to his namesake city. Angered and afraid that Houston would become the permanent seat of government in Texas, the citizens of Austin formed a vigilance committee and declared Houston's action illegal, warning that any attempt to move the archives would be met with armed resistance. Houston called for a special session of Congress at Washington-on-the-Brazos in December (the Mexican threat having long since passed) and ordered a detachment of Texas Rangers to seize the papers and bring them to Houston. Several shots were fired (two from cannon) before the Rangers gave up the documents in an effort to avoid more bloodshed. Thus ended the so-called Texas Archive War.
